"The Legend of the Mondala"
written by EJ Juliano

Jonas is a very "macho-type" teen. He believes that nothing in this universe can frighten him. His grandmother, tired of his attitude, then told him of the legend of the Mondala. There was only two of its kind. Because of this, they were their only companions. On one unfortunate night, one of the Mondalas was killed by a young man. It is said to have occurred at ten o'clock on Halloween night, 1915. The other Mondala was infuriated to have lost its only companion. It then made the murder scene its permanent home in order to wait for its comrade's killer. But it didn't live long enough to find the young boy, for it's life is only fifteen years. The Mondala ghost is believed to wander through the shadows at ten o'clock every Halloween in search for its revenge. It is able to disguise itself as any living thing. "You expect me to believe that?" he said in a haughty voice, "I'm not a moron you know."
He was in for a big surprise.

Jonas was sitting at home, watching television. His mother then called him away from his watching. "I need you to drop by the corner store and pick up a bag of ice," his mother ordered. Having been annoyed, he stormed out of the house. As he was walking toward the corner store, little children passed by with wonderful costumes. "Idiots," he said under his breath. He begins to walk again and pauses. A small abandoned alley grabs his attention. He walks to it and thinks. "Maybe it’s a shortcut to the store." He is then stopped by a sound. He twirls around and sees...nothing. Even the children are gone. He forces out a chuckle. "Probably just a cat." He turns back around and continues into the alley. Then he receives a sharp pain in his left shoulder. He whirls around, frightened out of his wits. Maniacal laughter echoes in his ears. His best friend Mike has punched him. "You freak! You scared the tar out of me!" "That was the point," Mike laughed. Then he runs away. "That dork," Jonas sneered. He then proceeded through the alley. At the alley's exit, he sees the store. But it seemed somehow different. He entered the door and made his way to the cooler. He grabbed a bag of ice and headed to the cashier. He paid the cashier $2.29 and headed out the door. Again he was uneasy, for the street seemed the same, but somewhat different. He remembers the alley but decides to just take the long way.

Approaching footsteps are heard. He turns around and sees a man. "How dare you leave me in solitude!" the man scolds. "What?" he replies. The man then approaches Jonas with anger. Jonas looks on in awe, and starts to run. As he runs down the road, the buildings appear to melt away. His surroundings transform into the alley he entered. The bag of ice he purchased had morphed into a bag of leaves. He drops the bag and picks up speed. He glances behind and the man is still in hot pursuit. Suddenly, the man's features melt off of his face to reveal two evil eyes. As he frantically ran, he sees a wall. He was crushed to realize that all of he energy used for his escape has gone to waste. He spun around aware he had no way out. As he stared into the creature's eyes, realizing who had been on the chase. Its eyes seemed to say, "I will finally fulfill my goal." Jonas then knew it was the Mondala. "What do you want from me?" Jonas pleaded. "You are responsible for my loneliness. And now you will perish," the Mondala answered. It then began to close in on him. Jonas slowly backed into the wall in search for a way out. A powder made contact with his fingertips, and an idea flashed in his mind. He grabbed a handful of the mysterious powder and launched it at the Mondala's face. It cringed in pain and lunged to the side. "This is my chance!" he exclaimed. Then ran to the alley's exit. He finally reached his home, panting with fatigue, and sat in his chair. "So where's the ice?" his mother interrogated. "Oh man, I couldn't get it," he complained. He went to the store and purchased the ice. Upon returning home, Mike implored him to go trick or treating with him. Jonas solemnly agreed. He dropped the ice off at home and walks out the door. They are again greeted by the happy chitter of the young children. "Now it is time," a voice said. It was a voice Jonas recognized. He looked to Michael's face and was filled with fear. He stared into the evil eyes, the same eyes from the alley. It wasn't Michael, it was the Mondala!
